Disney would like to buy Spider-Man rights from Sony
In recent years, Disney has put its hand in the pocket to buy the rights to Marvel characters, scattered all over the place. The acquisition of Fox has thus made it possible to regain control of the X-Men, Deadpool and Fantastic Four franchises, among others.
While Disney owns the rights to many heroes in the Marvel Universe, the entertainment giant has yet to come to terms with Sony for Spider-Man. Of course, Spider-Man is featured in the Marvel Cinematic Universe, but it’s a “loan” from Sony that has ambitions to set up its own Spidey-based cinematic universe, with Venom headlining, not to mention Carnage, Morbius, Kraven, etc.
5 billion for Spidey?
Disney could, however, put an end to this adventure: a new rumor indeed announces that the company is exploring the possibility of repurchasing the rights to the characters of the Spider-Man franchise, or simply of the Sony film division which would allow the passage to feed the Disney catalog.
This is not the first time that Disney has considered such a possibility. In 2019, the group would have put on the table between 4 to 5 billion dollars for the rights of Spider-Man. We saw with Fox that Disney was able to go to great lengths to get what it wanted: this acquisition indeed cost more than $ 70 billion. In addition to a large number of assets, this transaction allowed Disney to acquire the X-Men and the Fantastic Four, among other Marvel licenses.
With the success of Venom and more generally the universe of Spider-Man, it is possible that Sony is cut off the ears, which increases the stakes. If Disney succeeds, it will have a free hand to fully integrate Tom Holland into the MCU, which will open up potentially very lucrative prospects.
