New trailer for The Trial of the Chicago 7, Netflix’s next big production

The film, directed by Oscar-winning screenwriter Aaron Sorkin, will focus on the trial of the “The Trial of the Chicago 7“, which had fascinated America in the late 1960s.

A victim of the Covid-19 pandemic, The The Trial of the Chicago 7 could not be screened in theaters. Originally produced by Paramount who wanted the film to be released in the fall of 2020 in theaters, it was finally Netflix that took up the torch, as shown in the trailer released today. The latter, which suggests a very beautiful photograph and a real return to the 1960s, also shows an impressive cast, since we can see in this trailer Eddie Redmayne (Oscar for best actor for his interpretation of the physicist Stephen Hawking in the film A Wonderful History of Time), Joseph Gordon-Levitt (Inception, Looper), Sacha Baron Cohen (Borat, Ali G), or Yahya Abdul-Mateen II (seen in the Watchmen series or even in Aquaman) .

The Trial of the Chicago 7 don’t just have their cast to shine. We find in the production the screenwriter Aaron Sorkin, Oscar winner for the screenplay adapted from The Social Network, the film by David Fincher who looks back on the genesis of Facebook. This is not the only line on Sorkin’s resume, as Sorkin was at work behind The Newsroom series and The Great Game movie starring Jessica Chastain. Like the latter – dedicated to a gifted poker player – The Trial of the Chicago 7 is based on a true story and even on an important event in the history of the United States: the trial of protest organizers in Chicago in 1968, in full Democratic National Convention. The protesters were then campaigning against the American intervention in Vietnam.

The film is actually a long-standing project as a first script was written by Sorkin in 2007. The film was to be directed by Steven Spielberg at the time, but a strike halted production. Coincidence or deliberate choice, the film will finally be released just before the US presidential elections and in the midst of massive protest in Uncle Sam’s country.

Fans will be able to discover this political thriller on October 16 on Netflix. Like Martin Scorsese’s The Irishman or Marriage Story, The Trial of the Chicago 7 is undoubtedly a film cut out for awards and in particular for the Oscars. This year, Netflix had received no less than 20 nominations for its own productions. Aaron Sorkin’s new film therefore has something to weaken a little more the fine line that separates cinema from streaming today.
