HBO prepares a second Game of Thrones spin-off centered on the Targaryen

Daenerys Targaryen

HBO is preparing a new series in the world of “Game of Thrones”. It is a prequel centered on the Targaryen dynasty, and taking place 300 years before the events of the original series, according to several American media, including Deadline and The Hollywood Reporter. This new spin-off is based on the book “Fire and Blood”, written by George RR Martin, the author of the saga of “Throne of Iron”, the first part of which was published in 2018. This book traces the most significant episodes of the Targaryen dynasty, from their conquest of Westeros until their fall.

George R.R. Martin and Ryan Condal are the screenwriters of this prequel, which HBO is about to order a pilot episode, according to US media. It would then be the second project of series derived from “Game of Thrones” in preparation. The first is another prequel, which takes place thousands of years before the events of “Game of Thrones” and should evoke the origin of the White Walkers and the founding of the Stark and Lannister dynasties.

Maybe a third spin-off ?

In 2017, HBO commissioned scripts for four different spin-offs from its phenomenon series, and then added a fifth later. In addition to the two projects mentioned above, a third script is still relevant, according to The Hollywood Reporter, and could also be produced in series. HBO program director Casey Bloys said his channel was not preparing a sequel to the “Game of Thrones” series itself.

As for the creators and writers of the latter, which ended last May, David Benioff and D. B. Weiss, they have just signed a $ 200 million deal with Netflix, and are also preparing for a trilogy of Star Wars films for Disney. They seem to have completely turned the page “Game of Thrones”.
