After Hubie Halloween, Adam Sandler wants to make movies in space for Netflix

As Netflix unveiled the trailer for Midnight Into the Universe, by and starring George Clooney, it’s Adam Sandler’s turn to take to space.

After Uncut Gems, Adam Sandler had promised: if he didn’t receive the Oscar, he would punish us with one of the smoldering turnips he knows about. The artist kept his word and gave us the embarrassing Hubie Halloween, freshly uploaded by Netflix. But it looks like fate has smiled on him again, as he joins a project (again on behalf of the SVoD platform) that smacks of cinema, as revealed by Deadline.

It is an adaptation of the novel Un Astronaute en bohème, written by Jaroslav Kalfar and adapted by Colby Day, who has so far worked mainly in the field of short films. There we follow Jakup, an astrophysicist from the Czech Republic, sent into space on an exceptional mission. A cloud of unknown origin covers Venus, and humanity wants to study it, but along the way, Jakub learns that his wife is leaving him. His expedition will then take an unexpected turn.

So much for the starting point of this feature film which does not yet have an official title, but will be directed by Johan Renck, who is not exactly a newcomer, since he has directed episodes of Breaking Bad, Bates Motel, Halt and Catch Fire, Vikings or more recently Chernobyl, which hit the headlines in 2019. It is also he who will be in charge of the staging of the pilot of the series The Last of Us. Not exactly a full penguin. We also find on the production side Channing Tatum, who will officiate alongside Reid Carolin, Peter Kiernan and Michael Parets.

It is not yet known when the film will be released, but it confirms Netflix’s desire to offer science fiction feature films, while broadening its offer a little beyond the general public. It remains to be seen whether this project between intimate reflection and science fiction adventure will satisfy the public in the manner of the Uncut Gems tornado. But after years of stringing mediocre comedies in the vein of Murder Mystery, we hope that the actor regains all the verve of which he is capable, which we feared lost after the Punch-Drunk Love shock.
