Ferrari Film by Michael Mann Gets a Release Date on Amazon Prime
Ferrari Film by Michael Mann to Premiere on Amazon Prime
The elegant Ferrari masterpiece by renowned director Michael Mann finally has a French release date, and it’s coming to Amazon Prime Video.
Before embarking on the creation of ‘Heat 2,’ the celebrated Michael Mann returns to the director’s chair after the less-than-stellar reception of ‘Hacker’ in 2015. What better way to make a comeback than by capturing the thunderous roar of high-speed racing at the legendary Mille Miglia? ‘Ferrari,’ featuring an exceptional cast including Adam Driver as one of Italy’s greatest racing legends and industrialists, narrates the thrilling and tumultuous journey of Enzo Ferrari.
A 20-year-old project, ‘Ferrari,’ delves into the events of the summer of 1957, a time when the former racer’s family factory faced threats while the Formula 1 World Championship unfolded. The film also explores the existential crisis of Commendatore Ferrari, whose marriage hangs by a thread. Adapted from Broye Yates’ novel, “Enzo Ferrari: The Man, The Cars, The Race, The Machine,” we finally have a release date for one of the most ambitious films by the American filmmaker. Unsurprisingly, ‘Ferrari’ won’t be gracing French cinemas; instead, it’s heading to Amazon Prime Video on March 8, 2024.
Watching ‘Ferrari’ from Home
It’s a bittersweet realization that we’ll experience ‘Ferrari’ via streaming, despite its breathtaking period racing recreations. While the film had a theatrical release in the United States on December 25, 2023, Amazon is challenging the traditional media release schedule. The e-commerce giant will directly stream the biopic in France, even though ‘Ferrari’ had and will have a theatrical window in certain European cinemas.
This ongoing tug-of-war between streaming giants and France, which fiercely protects its cinema market and theaters, is not new. However, occasional miracles like Luca Guadagnino’s ‘Challengers,’ initially slated as an Amazon exclusive but now set to release in French cinemas on April 24, offer hope.
The State of Media Release Timelines
The media release timeline went through reforms in 2022 to adapt to changing distribution norms. Netflix emerged as the primary beneficiary of these reforms, far ahead of Amazon and Disney+. Netflix was the only platform to sign an agreement on local financing, committing to reinvest 20% to 25% of its annual revenue in French production.
While changes may be in the works behind the scenes, they won’t alter ‘Ferrari’s’ fate, which is set to premiere on Prime Video on March 8, 2024.
